Apple A8

Apple A8 - мощный ARM-чип, появившийся в сентябре 2014 года в смартфонах iPhone 6 и iPhone 6 Plus. Это второй ARM-чип Apple с поддержкой 64-битного набора инструкций ARMv8. Его два процессорных ядра работают на частоте в 1.4 ГГц и построены на ARMv8-совместимой архитектуре Cyclone 2. Также имеется контроллер памяти LPDDR3-1333 и графический ускоритель PowerVR GX6450.

Архитектура

Второе поколение архитектуры Cyclone демонстрирует улучшившуюся примерно на 10-15% производительность на такт, по-прежнему опережающую архитектуры конкурентов (Qualcomm Krait и ARM Cortex-A57). Разумеется, Apple не разглашает подробностей о проделанной модернизации, но, скорее всего, было оптимизировано предсказание переходов, а регистры и кэши увеличились в объеме. Как и Cyclone, Cyclone 2 поддерживает 64-разрядные вычисления в соответствии со стандартом ARMv8.

Производительность

Несмотря на всего лишь два ядра и относительно низкую рабочую частоту в 1.4 ГГц, высокая производительность на такт позволяет A8 конкурировать с такими решениями, как Nvidia Tegra K1 (4 ядра, 2.3 ГГц) и Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (4 ядра, 2.7 ГГц). Последние выигрывают только в многопоточных приложениях, которые в списке повседневных задач (браузер, просмотр мультимедиа) находятся в меньшинстве. Таким образом, A8 можно считать одним из самых быстрых процессоров для смартфонов на конец 2014 года и начало 2015.

Графика

Используется графический ускоритель PowerVR GX6450 (Series 6, "Rogue"), включающий 4 кластера, каждый из которых включает четыре вычислительных ядра FP16 и два ядра FP32. Это обеспечивает несколько улучшенную шейдерную производительность по сравнению с G6430 (Apple A7). Для удержания энергопотребления в разумных рамках ядро работает на относительно низкой частоте в 450 МГц (115 GFLOPS). Однако этого хватает, чтобы оставить позади Qualcomm Adreno 330 (Snapdragon 800/801), что выводит GX6450 чуть ли не на первое место среди графических адаптеров для смартфонов 2014 года.

Энергопотребление

Если предыдущие чипы Apple производились Samsung на 28-нм техпроцессе, то A8 делается на заводах TSMC с использованием нового 20-нм процесса, и включает около 2 миллиардов транзисторов. Поэтому его энергопотребление должно быть сравнимо с конкурирующими флагманскими чипами Qualcomm и Samsung для смартфонов.
