The Intel Core i3-N305 isn’t as speedy as a more conventional Core i3, but give it 8GB of RAM to work with and it’s not going to slow you down in everyday work. What’s more, it has stamina to spare. Were it not for the slightly chunky design, the less than stellar keyboard and the lack of extra USB-C ports, I’d pitch it as one of the best cost-conscious Chromebooks you can buy. As is, it’s still fantastic value, provided you can live with some minor issues here and there.

Reviews like these are tough to sum up. For the price of $319, you’re getting a computer with a pretty decent display, nice webcam, great battery life, pleasant keyboard, and nice speakers. It’s a nice computer in those respects with some aspects punching above the price tag. However, features like those mentioned above don’t mean much if the performance is bad. It doesn’t matter if the speakers are nice if navigating to the music player is a pain each time. Those features do well to enhance an already strong performance; they don’t make up for poor performance, however. I understand that the MediaTek processor is a more cost-effective offering and it lent to the battery performance, but the software experience was plagued from the start. I think that the performance of a brand-new computer shouldn’t be this bad, no matter how affordable it is. When you part with money for a new computer, no matter how economical it is, you’re still paying for a device that performs specific tasks. If it shows that it can’t perform those tasks, then what’s the point?

It has enough power for light use and the battery will keep you going long after your workday ends. The inclusion of a 1080p touch display is a nice feature to have on a sub-$400 laptop. Performance could be a touch snappier, but that’s just my own personal nitpick. You’ll need to taper your expectations some, especially as this machine has only 4GB of RAM. If you need an inexpensive everyday machine, then the IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is worth your hard-earned cash.

If you keep your tasks limited and try to stick to one or two things at a time, it offers a nice, smooth experience. The big benefit is battery life, which looks to easily pace at the 13-hour mark Lenovo touts for this device. These types of caveats are fine in a $319 Chromebook, they are not even worrisome on a device that continues to be on sale for $169. At that sort of price, the Slim 3 is an absolute steal. If by the time you are reading this post you see it elevated back to the full MSRP and you are ready to get one, I’d tell you to hold off if possible: the track record on this one makes me think it will be on sale a lot.

This is why the IdeaPad Slim 3 (16″, 2023) is such a good product. We are really impressed by its port selection. It includes only fast USBs and the USB Type-C port even offers Power Delivery and DisplayPort output functionality. The SD card reader is only here to sweeten the deal. Yes, there are some features that we don’t like. For example, the memory is soldered to the motherboard. On top of that, if you opt for 8GB, you will get it in single-channel mode, which will cripple the graphics performance. Speaking of which, even the Ryzen 3 7330U has enough power to get you through any load you throw at it.

Alright, folks, it looks like the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (14″ AMD, Gen 8) is a fair deal. Sure, its cooling isn’t the best of the best but that’s expected for the class. The plastic chassis is flexible but again, this is normal for an inexpensive 14-incher. On the other hand, the laptop is light and compact, so the portability is good. Let’s get back to the cooling once again – it has just one fan and one heat pipe, the fan is noisy when the CPU is under long heavy loads (and the temperatures are going above and beyond the 80°C mark), but the processor’s performance is definitely there. The chip can maintain close frequencies to the other two laptops with the same CPU that we have tested so far. In terms of raw power, the laptop is doing a fine job.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 15 is an effective, utilitarian machine, and there’s plenty to get out of it in that respect. It has enough pep to coast through light, everyday computing tasks. It’s a pleasure to type on and is easy on the eyes thanks to a bright, anti-glare screen. But it doesn’t have much performance headroom, and it won’t be up to the task for more demanding applications. So don’t consider this machine if you’re looking for an affordable workstation. And, even though the display gets plenty bright, it produces drab and dull colors. Even a bump to 100% sRGB color coverage would benefit it dramatically. Last year’s Asus ZenBook 14 OLED showed just what a lower-cost laptop display could look like. By contrast, Lenovo’s machine is a slab of somewhat cheap-feeling plastic. Its battery life could also be better. At $660, it’s just $100 shy of a frequently discounted Apple MacBook Air M1, which is a battery-life behemoth and has the edge on portability and build quality.

It’s a pleasure to type on and is easy on the eyes thanks to a bright, anti-glare screen. But it doesn’t have much performance headroom, and it won’t be up to the task for more demanding applications. So don’t consider this machine if you’re looking for an affordable workstation. And, even though the display gets plenty bright, it produces drab and dull colors. Even a bump to 100% sRGB color coverage would benefit it dramatically. Last year’s Asus ZenBook 14 OLED showed just what a lower-cost laptop display could look like. By contrast, Lenovo’s machine is a slab of somewhat cheap-feeling plastic. Its battery life could also be better. At $660, it’s just $100 shy of a frequently discounted Apple MacBook Air M1, which is a battery-life behemoth and has the edge on portability and build quality.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (15″, Gen 8) is a good laptop for daily tasks or normal office usage if you pick a device with the optional IPS display (LEN156FHD (LEN9052)). It has wide viewing angles and a good contrast ratio of 1410:1. The panel is also PWM-free which is great. The sRGB coverage is low but that’s okay given the end price of the notebook. The build quality isn’t that good. Both lid and base can be flexed badly and you can spot a lot of bends even while typing. However, the notebook is thin and light for a 15-incher. It has a profile of 17.9 mm and the starting weight is 1.62 kg. The I/O is fine for such a device – three USB’s and an SD card reader. Sadly, all ports are rated at 5 Gbps. The memory is soldered and the maximum possible amount of 16GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM should be enough for most users, at least for now. Keep in mind that the RAM of the 8GB iterations works in single-channel mode.

So you can see pretty quickly why this device is so likeable. It does nothing to get in its own way. I love the chassis, build quality, screen and keyboard. The trackpad is good (not great), the internals are all I really need, and even the speakers are pretty good. Unless you need a convertible or would rather get a 16:10 screen, there’s nothing this Chromebook misses on. And you feel that each time you pick it up. We made a video before Chromebook Plus was launched and wondered if the non-Chromebook Plus-branded version of this device was a sign of things to come. Of course, we were right in saying this model would get a branded Chromebook Plus sibling, but I didn’t realize at the time just how right the Slim 3i got the whole Chromebook Plus equation. If you are looking for a Plus model that isn’t just good, but seriously great, this is the one you want.

В пассиве у ноутбука Lenovo IdeaPad Slim3 15IAN8 главным образом малый объем оперативной памяти в 8 гигабайт, который нельзя увеличить ни самостоятельно, ни выбором другой конфигурации при покупке (предложение с 4 ГБ сегодня вообще выглядит печальной несуразицей), да к тому же работает она в одноканальном режиме. Для нашего экземпляра надо упомянуть и отсутствие подсветки клавиатуры, хотя заявлены варианты с наличием таковой. Кому-то может быть неудобен неотключаемый тачпад. Посредственный экран оценим нейтрально: иного трудно ожидать в недорогом ноутбуке, но хотя бы используется матрица IPS. Сканер отпечатка пальцев редко встречается в бюджетных моделях, нет его и здесь. В наших тестах ноутбук показал очень хорошее (хотя и не рекордное) время автономной работы, а восстанавливается заряд в батарее быстро: до 100% менее чем за два часа.

Графические процессоры этой категории производительности справятся лишь с самыми простыми играми, больше подходя для простых дел - просмотра видео в Сети и обработки документов. Плюсом можно считать скромный нагрев и расход энергии.
