Its partially metal finish is a cut above, its keyboard and touchpad are nice, and it offers reasonable battery life and value. However its screen is several rungs below average, its connections are awkward to access, it lacks dedicated graphics, and all told it simply offers little over its competition.

We're just not fans of the port covers or the way the laptop's touchpad handles some multitouch gestures. Other than those minor issues, the Dell Inspiron 14z is a very good value.

The Dell Inspiron 14z 2011 model update turns out to be a mixed bag. While it has a lot going for it in terms of interesting design, nice build quality, great blend of ports and new technologies, it also has a couple of big gotchas. The touchpad implementation is really pretty bad, making for a frustrating user experience. The amount of fan noise the N411z produced was also a major annoyance during testing. Both of those problems might be able to get resolved with some driver updates though, I literally purchased this laptop the day it came out and it tends to be the case the early adopters are the ones that get to experience the buggy drivers that are soon updated. Those cons aside, if you want a 14-inch laptop with great battery life of up to 6 hours, thin profile and quality aluminum case build, nice bright screen and a price starting just under $600 then the new Inspiron N411z update to the Inspiron 14z is an option worth considering and comparing to some other 14-inch laptops out there.

I'm disappointed that Dell dropped the 1080p screen from the entry model and that your only option to get it back is to spend at least $200 more. If possible, spend the extra money.

It's very thin, relatively light, and decently powerful. Dell obviously made some choices with the hardware configuration to keep costs down, and unless you're absolutely militant about lightning-fast startup and shutdown times, you'll appreciate the cost savings more than you'll miss the SSD.

In real-world use, we found the performance to be quite good. The benchmark didn't do this computer justice, but that's sometimes the flaw of those numbers. For the average user (or even the more advanced user), looking for a portable computer with good performance, this one won't disappoint. Watching streaming HD video worked smoothly as well as doing moderately heavy multitasking. You won't be able to do any 3D gaming on this laptop, however, but that is the price you pay for wanting portability.

Графические процессоры этой категории производительности практически не подходят дли игр, но справятся с самыми простыми делами, вроде отображения 2D-материала на экране умеренного разрешения.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Intel HD Graphics 3000 - экономичный графический чип, интегрированный в процессоры Intel серии Sandy Bridge. Этот видеоускоритель не имеет собственной памяти и использует 12 вычислительных ядер.

Графические процессоры этой категории производительности справятся лишь с самыми простыми играми, больше подходя для простых дел - просмотра видео в Сети и обработки документов. Плюсом можно считать скромный нагрев и расход энергии.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Видеопроцессор, встраиваемый в некоторые центральные процессоры Intel семейства Ivy Bridge. Поддерживает DirectX 11, располагает 16 блоками EU, изготавливается на 22-нанометровом производстве. Располагает разной максимальной Boost-частотой в зависимости от конкретной модели центрального процессора, что заметно влияет на производительность.

Intel HD Graphics 4400: Низковольтная видеокарта класса GT2 с 20 исполнительными устройствами, встроенная в некоторые процессоры Intel семейства Haswell.
