Touch has come a long way, baby. From the first Windows convertible tablets (which are still being produced by a couple of manufacturers) to the Apple iPad in all of its touch glory, touch-input devices today look and feel a lot better than they used to. The highly configurable XPS 15 is a speedy performer, and the touch screen in our test unit was both convenient and fun. It's a winning touch laptop.

The majority of this review shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. We know quad-core Sandy Bridge is faster than Clarksfield, and it’s much faster than Arrandale. It also manages reasonable power usage under light loads, although higher loads can definitely suck down power. So take one of our favorite laptops from last year and update the system with a Sandy Bridge CPU and a slightly newer GPU and what do you get?

The ThinkPad Edge E220s is the best-looking and most comfortable small business notebook on the market. Its gorgeous soft-plastic and chrome design makes a bold statement in the boardroom or the coffee shop and its keyboard provides the best typing experience in the business. Plus, its slight frame fits comfortably in even the smallest bag. Our only issue is the E220's below-average battery life, though the approximate 5 hours of runtime will be long enough for many users. If you need more endurance, consider the $855 Toshiba Portege R835, which lasts an hour and a half longer on a charge. However, if you want the ultimate in small business style and comfort, the ThinkPad Edge E220s should be at the top of your list.

И это уже за цену вполовину меньше. Однако не в том суть. Важно то, как новый Dell XPS 15 воспринимается в целом, в его строгом, без пафоса, дорогостоящем дизайне. Сложно представить себе того, кто захочет такой ноутбук по такой цене. Если нужны игры, тогда логично смотреть на варианты от ASUS, MSI или родственного Alienware. Да, там будут толще корпуса, но лучше решены вопросы с охлаждением, да и сами ноутбуки будут заметно мощнее, выступая в роли относительно мобильных игровых устройств. Для дома и работы можно выбрать варианты попроще, аналоги обойдутся существенно дешевле, можно остановить свой выбор на моделях с более практичным Full HD разрешением. Такие модели легко найти у ASUS или Lenovo, соотношение цены и производительности у них будет более оптимальным. Пока же такие экраны — по большей части переплата с неким заделом на будущее, но, как показывает практика, компьютерное железо устаревает слишком быстро, чтобы инвестировать в него деньги, надеясь на некие плюсы в отдаленной перспективе.

Ноутбук Dell XPS 15 (9530-7949) получился весьма неоднозначным. В его плюсы можно смело записывать отличный внешний вид, полностью металлический корпус и приличные эргономические качества. Также стоит отметить экран с разрешением 3200х1800, хотя тут все зависит от тех приложений, с которыми вы работаете. Высокое разрешение будет в радость — если под него адаптированы программы, однако во многих приложениях, создатели которых не удосужились предусмотреть использование таких дисплеев, повышенная плотность точек будет только создавать проблемы.

The Dell XPS 15 9530 is a great laptop to use. The bright, vibrant and incredibly high resolution screen is truly beautiful to look at, though it does have a major drawback – it is extremely reflective. This makes it very difficult to use in a bright room or in an outdoor environment, as the reflection of your own face will be very distracting. In low light conditions, the gloss screen does help improve media viewing quality, but a matt finish would be more to our own tastes. That screen looks stunning when playing ‘casual’ titles like Hearthstone but it will struggle to run anything moderately intensive at native resolutions … the modest GT750M graphics are just not designed for this. It’s not that 1080p looks bad, but it just seems wasteful having all that pixel density and not being able to use it. It might have been nice to see an upgrade option for a 765M or 770M, but then you’re crossing over into Alienware territory.

But how does it stack up to the Apple MacBook Pro, our current Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops? It matches the MacBook Pro in performance (multimedia and 3D), has more RAM, higher resolution touch screen, and twice the storage. However, it also has a higher price by almost $300, problems with glass reflectivity, and two hours less battery life. The MacBook Pro comes with iWork and iLife apps, which arguably make the MacBook more useful without additional purchases for the XPS 15. In terms of bragging rights, premium construction materials, and wow factor, both are even. It is very close, but those two hours of battery life and $300 price difference tips the scales in favor of the current champ. The XPS 15 (9530) comes highly recommended, but at the end of the day if we were in the market for such a system and if it were our money, we'd buy the MacBook Pro.

Было бы странно, если бы XPS 15 стал «отличником» во всех дисциплинах — даже в самом дорогостоящем классе ноутбуки не обходятся без недостатков. Зато его нельзя назвать и «провинциалом» даже в сравнении с пресловутым MacBook Pro. Главный «вау-фактор» нашего героя свой статус подтвердил — дисплей действительно удивительно хорош и стоит увидеть его вживую, прежде чем судить о модели. Мощность тоже на уровне, её даже хватает для игр в Full HD при средней детализации. Только системе охлаждения в таком режиме работается тяжело, поэтому не исключено, что в играх конца 2016 — начала 2017 года наш герой будет перегреваться и притормаживать, в отличие от «чистокровных» игробуков.

Действительно уже одна начинка стоит того, чтобы обратить внимание на Dell XPS 15 (9550). Современный процессор шестой генерации в связке с производительной дискретной графикой NVIDIA и 8 ГБ ОЗУ заметно увеличивает шансы устройства быть отличным мультимедийником. Сюда же стоит добавить матовый дисплей с Full HD-разрешением и широкой обзорностью, хорошую акустику, а также удобную клавиатуру с подсветкой. Если говорить о портах, то среди них имеется новый USB 3.1 Type-C/ Thunderbolt 3, а два других USB позволяют подзаряжать от ноутбука мобильные устройства. Возможно, автономность Dell XPS 15 (9550) не слишком высока, но и 5.5 часов для веб-серфинга тоже неплохо, особенно в дороге, когда нужно быть все время на связи. В общем, это достаточно хороший ноутбук, который непременно найдет своего покупателя.

The Dell XPS 15 is a great all-rounder laptop. Come to it expecting superlatives, especially the version tested, and you may come away disappointed. However, it is very versatile indeed. It offers a powerful CPU, a competent discrete graphics card, a screen happy with the outdoors and a frame that's light and slim given the rest of the spec. It can do everything pretty well, without the power compromises of an ultra-skinny laptop, or the portability ones of a workstation. Some will be disappointed with the stamina, but it's actually rather respectable given the processor. It's a laptop that's good at just about everything, bar lasting absolutely ages between charges.

I’ll try to keep it short this time. The Dell XPS 15 9550 I5/960M version is a very good machine in my opinion, more than the usual $1000 gaming laptops – way more thin & lightweight, much better build quality, display has much higher contrast than the others and keyboard is better than compared to some of them too. And remember the better support in the form of drivers/bios updates.

I love the keyboards on ThinkPad notebooks, and the trackpads on MacBooks. But the XPS 15 is my new favorite laptop, hands down. This is not to downplay the XPS 13, itself a fine ultra-portable machine with tremendous upside. The price on the 13-inch machine begins at just $799, and it provides a tremendous experience if you don't need the additional power or larger, better display of the 15-inch model.

Siblings have to find their own path forward, not just follow, and the XPS 15 does that quite well.

So, rather than being kick-ass gaming portable, the Dell XPS 15 is more of a good all-round notebook with great battery life that you can also play games pretty well on. It’s also a little on the pricey side, when MSI’s brilliant GS40 6QE Phantom can be had for over £100 less, with much more compelling gaming abilities and a lighter chassis. Most of the price difference is due to the screen, however. It is lovely, and confers great bragging rights, but adds £300 to the price compared to the Full HD model. So the latter is the better value option, with Full HD better suited to the GPU performance anyway.

It is not a laptop for everyone, but I know three "regular" people who swear by this machine. While a 4.4-pound laptop sounds odd in 2016, sometimes you just need what the XPS 15 can deliver, and for that, I'm glad it's here.

The Dell XPS 15 is a fantastic laptop and a no-brainer purchase for anyone who wants a laptop that lives primarily on a desk at home or in the office. It’s cheaper and more highly specc’d than a MacBook Pro and makes far more sense to buy than something like a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The 4K screen is seriously gorgeous to look at while the colour accuracy makes it ideal for anyone working with graphics. We'd happily buy one of these for ourselves and that's about the highest praise we can give.

But if you’re not convinced the XPS 15 is for you or don’t want a Windows laptop, consider the MacBook Pro 16-inch, which costs roughly $50 more than what our XPS 15 review unit sells for. While Apple's premium laptop isn’t great for gaming (unless you're playing games from Apple's macOS/iOS App Stores), it’s exceptional for everyday work and serious photo/audio/video editing. If you're looking for a gaming laptop comparable to the XPS 15 OLED, the Alienware m15 R4 and Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2022) are solid choices. Dell XPS 15 (9530) review: a great laptop starts to falter

As I’ve mentioned throughout this review, there’s much to like about the XPS 15 (9530)’s design. It’s still sleek and modern enough that newer 15-inch laptops don’t eclipse it, but even so, it’s starting to feel a little dated. Certainly, you can’t fault the build quality. But the CPU upgrade was underwhelming, providing minimal performance improvement — unlike the XPS 15 (9520), which was a big jump over its previous generation. It’s only the addition of the RTX 4070 option that gives the XPS 15 (9530) a meaningful boost in performance, and even there, it’s less than it might be due to the GPU running close to its minimal power specification. Toss in an old-school 720p webcam and Wi-Fi 6, and this year’s XPS 15 lacks some of the cutting-edge feel it once had.
