On the other hand, a lot of people are specifically after a Sony device, and if you liked the Xperia 1 then you should equally enjoy the Xperia 5 because it's almost an exact replica - just smaller and, more crucially, £141 cheaper at £699. Sure, there's some work to be done here, but the Xperia 5 is quite a high five.

The Sony Xperia 5 II turns in an average performance overall among the devices we’ve put through our Display testing protocol to this point. In general conditions — indoors during the daytime and in the shade outside — it is quite readable, has a suitable level of brightness, and renders colors well, although with a slight tendency to oversaturate the blues. It’s in darkness and in bright outdoor conditions that the device falters. The Xperia 5 II doesn’t manage display in direct sunlight as well as some others we’ve tested, and it’s too dim in the dark, especially with the blue light filter on. In terms of video playback, the overall darkness when playing HDR10 contents is a big impediment to enjoying the show, and that outweighs the generally reactive video playback control and well-managed motion blur. A bright point for the Xperia 5 II is its nimbleness as a gaming device. Aside from some issues with aliasing, it’s fun for playing games.

В остальном же это, наверное, самый удобный на сегодня флагман, который к тому же избавлен от лишних модных тенденций вроде вырезов или отверстий для фронталки, мешающих смотреть видео на весь экран, или отсутствия мини-джека. При этом он получил очень крутую систему камер от Xperia 1 III без серьезных изменений (не считать же таковыми отсутствие TOF-камеры — тем более что режим программного размытия фона есть и здесь) и защищенный корпус с неожиданно емким для своих габаритов аккумулятором. Не изменившийся и даже поскучневший в плане выбора цветов дизайн может расстроить — но, пожалуй, только тех, кто привык менять смартфон каждый год и планировал сменить Xperia 5 II на Xperia 5 III. Это вымирающий вид смартфона, который реально повернут лицом в первую очередь к пользователю, а не к модным тенденциям.

Unfortunately, I didn’t come away with the same feelings that I did after spending time with the Xperia PRO-I. But that’s also not surprising when you consider that these phones are meant for two different audiences. Something that really stuck in the back of my mind with the Xperia 5 III is the cost. Sony’s retail price for this phone here in the U.S. comes in at $999 and with options like the Galaxy S22 and Pixel 6 available it might be a tough pill to swallow. Samsung’s compact flagship starts at $799, while the Pixel 6 is just $599. Sure, Sony’s promise here is to provide a flagship experience in a compact form factor, and it executes that very well. But this steep price tag is going to make it difficult for the Xperia 5 III to be considered a true contender in the space. And it’s really a shame because this is another great Sony device.

Granted, the display’s aspect ratio is uncommon compared to its competitors but what you get here is a solid performer with good battery life, great cameras, and excellent display while still being able to retain the 3.5mm audio jack. It’s not perfect but even though options for a compact flagship smartphone is few and far in between, going for this doesn’t mean you’re settling for less as this can serve you well. There’s no doubt the Xperia 5 iii is an excellent phone. It’s a small, premium, and feature-rich flagship with a standout design and a trick telephoto shooter. We like the beautiful display, Alpha camera experience, superior audio features, solid performance, and clean software. But while it’s better than Sony’s previous phones, it still lacks some critical features, like better computational photography, broader 5G support, and wireless charging. We might be able to gloss over these omissions, but considering the Xperia 5 iii is now months old and costs about $1000, that’s a hard sell. For that kind of money, you can buy Samsung’s outgoing Galaxy S21 Ultra (currently $945) or Google’s Pixel 6 Pro ($899) and have change left over. Not only are these two of the best imaging phones available today, they don’t skimp on full 5G support or wireless charging. Ultimately, we appreciate what Sony’s shooting for with the Xperia 5 iii.

The 4500mAh battery lasted for nearly 16 hours under the PCMark for Android battery rundown test, and Sony's claim of half an hour to charge the battery to 50% feels accurate to me. There's no wireless charging here, in contrast to the Xperia 1 III. The Xperia 5 III is a well-specified phone with a price tag to match. However, given that video viewing and photography using its 21:9 screen is a major selling point, you might be tempted to pay a bit more for the flagship Xperia 1 III with its larger, high-resolution screen.

Overall, it’s another very good phone from Sony, if not on the expensive side once again. As much as I’ve enjoyed my time with the Xperia 5 III, it certainly doesn’t have it all. The lack of wireless charging and 5G mmWave, combined with a mediocre selfie camera and slow charging leaves the phone feeling a little rough in places. Of course, we expected some downgrades compared to the Xperia 1 III to make the phone more affordable. But Sony has discarded a few too many of the elite features that gave the Xperia 1 III its wow factor. As such, the Xperia 5 III is less appealing, even at a lower price. The lack of a long-term update roadmap is equally unfortunate for a phone looking to command such a premium.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is a smartphone with a very clearcut purpose, to pack high-end hardware into a compact phone. And it does that very well. You can easily use this phone one-handed, and while the screen might be a fair amount smaller than you'd get elsewhere, it is still fine to use for watching videos on your commute or reading through the news. The focus here is on quality and that seeps down into every part of the phone, whether you’re talking about the speedy 5G processor, the sleek but sturdy design or the excellent snapper with loads of customisation. The only area where it slightly disappointed me was the battery life which could definitely be improved. If you want a powerful but compact phone and you don't mind paying a premium price for it, then this is the best one out there right now. It’d be hard not to recommend the Sony Xperia 5 III.

It is a smaller device that doesn’t compromise on performance, cameras or display, adding up to an unmistakably premium experience. But Sony shoots itself in the foot in three areas: camera software that you need to take a photography course to use beyond the auto mode, an overheating problem, and very minor upgrades over the Xperia 5 II (which costs significantly less). This is a niche smartphone. If you can make the most of it, you’ll love every second and forgive these issues. If not, I recommend looking elsewhere like the Google Pixel 6 Pro or OnePlus 9 Pro.

In its heyday, in partnership with Ericsson, Sony was one of the biggest players in the mobile market. Ever since it split and entered the Android space on its own, it has been consistently trying (and sometimes succeeding) to reinvent the wheel to recapture a little of its past glory. The Xperia 5 III is a testament to that ambition, showcasing a lot of what the company is good at. The camera arrangement is versatile, audio reproduction is great and the screen is vibrant and sharp. Battery life is a particular strong suit, and its long-tall design stands out once more. But for issues with thermal performance, somewhat iffy pictures from the telephoto lenses and a high price, the Sony Xperia 5 III would otherwise be a simple recommendation. There are also much more do-it-all, generalist handsets at lower prices that may suit better, such as the Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Sony Xperia 5 III is an accomplished smartphone, but it’s perhaps just a little too specialised to be an easy fit for the public at large.

The fundamentals of the Xperia 5 III are good: there's a comprehensive camera wanting to offer more to those keen on photography, but not delivering the same computational photography experience you might get elsewhere; the design and dust/water protection is good, and there's plenty of battery life. For some this will be the ideal phone, given its smaller-scale build, but the older Xperia 5 II might just offer you all those things too - without the inflated cost.

We wrote at the top that the accounts do not fall out in favor of the Sony Xperia 5 III, even though the price has been lowered by a third compared to the flagship model. It is clear that one has to make some compromises when the price is to be lowered, and some of Sony’s choices make good sense. There is no reason why a mobile with a 6.1-inch screen should have 4K resolution, and we did not miss the iToF sensor either when we tested the camera. But it’s a problem that the Xperia 5 III gets so extremely hot if you challenge the processor, and for the price we also expected wireless charging and better sound in the built-in speakers. The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, which arrived at the beginning of the year, costs the same as the Xperia 5 III, but has twice as much storage space as well as wireless charging, and then it performs like a nuclear power plant without breaking a sweat. You should buy the Sony Xperia 5 III if the camera’s pro options are tempting – or if you generally prefer a more compact smartphone.

So if you're looking for a high-end Sony, the Xperia 5 III is the sensible choice over the 1 III. But, more importantly, the 5 III is hard to beat by any reasonably-sized outside competition either. And by that, we mean there's no match for the completeness of its spec sheet and more or less its actual overall performance. Now, there are a couple of issues for the 5 III - price and availability. It's more expensive at launch than any of the direct rivals we have in mind for it, and that launch is happening way too late - in September, after an April announcement. If you can wait until then, and then maybe wait some more for its price to drop a little, the Xperia 5 III might just make all the sense.

Смартфон дорогой и явно не для массового пользователя, но своего покупателя найдет несмотря на высокую стоимость. Главным минусом девайса является сырое ПО, которое может вызвать отторжение при поверхностном ознакомлении с ним. Это отсеивает огромное количество потенциальных пользователей, которых отпугнет тормозящий интерфейс, что крайне обидно, учитывая потенциал смартфона и репутацию бренда.

By sticking to the same price point and making some long-overdue tweaks to the 5 series formula, the Xperia 5 IV is a worthy alternative to the ever-popular Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus ($999.99 at Samsung) and Apple iPhone 14 Pro ($999.99 at Best Buy). Sporting photography, charging, and multimedia capabilities that closely match and even exceed its rivals, albeit in a much more compact form factor, the brand’s long-standing reputation with audio and video enthusiasts remains intact. The Xperia 5 IV isn’t quite a bargain like the Google Pixel 7 Pro ($749 at Amazon), even with all this tech onboard, but it’s close and much more palatable than the extreme price tag of the Xperia 1 IV, making it a solid pick for mainstream consumers who have their eye on Sony’s best-in-class features. That said, smoother performance can be found in more modern rivals, such as those sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and aspects of the phone’s design are a little dated. Unfortunately, Sony isn’t matching the long-term support offered by other leading manufacturers either, making the Xperia 5 IV impossible to recommend to anyone looking for a phone that will serve them well past the three-year mark when security updates will cease. Sony has a very tempting hardware and software package in the Xperia 5 IV; now it just needs to play with the big names in the update space as well.

While I would say that the Xperia 5 IV, like its bigger brother, is a year-on-year update over the last generation, the updates that have been given to this phone’s camera capabilities are, interestingly, significant. Once again, while the Xperia 5 IV lacks the ability to perform continuous zoom like the bigger 1 IV, the way the phone tastefully applies the bokeh effect to each and every picture is impressive and perhaps one of the better implementations on a Snapdragon 8 Gen1-powered device that I have personally used, to-date. Of course, it also helps that the phone isn’t a slouch, by any measure of the definition. Having said that, I do find it a little hard to justify the asking price of RM4899, especially since, as you can see in the competition section, there are other devices in its class that offer more in terms of real-world and day-to-day features, including digital wallets, such as Samsung Pay or Wallet, or Apple Pay. Is the Xperia 5 IV a lot of fun? Not necessarily. But, if you’re looking for a compact shooter that is capable of capturing pictures in low-light situations with just a moderate amount of post-processing, this could be the phone for you.

Compared with devices from the same Ultra-premium price range ($800+), the Xperia 5 IV achieved a decent global score mainly because of its excellent autonomy and efficiency, but its charging performance was among the lowest. The 30W charger struggled to fill the large 5000 mAh battery. Its efficiency, however, was excellent, and its residual consumption, among the lowest in our database, was well-managed. When testing each usage separately, the the Sony Xperia 5 IV’s autonomy was always above average, and its performance on the go was just the same, especially when calling. The discharge currents were low on average, showing that the device was well-managed.

Buying a Sony phone today is quite intentional. You probably won’t be swayed to get the rather specialist Xperia 5 IV if you had your eyes on an iPhone 14 originally. But if you want a phone that packs in every feature you can think of without compromising on performance, build, or battery life, then this is a great choice. Considering Sony doesn’t make many different phones anymore, I implore the company to extend software support for phones like the 5 IV – two years is insultingly little time for such a capable device to be considered up to date with modern Android features and security. Fix that, and I could recommend the Xperia 5 IV to a wider audience than I currently can. If you want a phone from the top drawer with a great screen, headphone jack, and cameras that act like actual cameras that don’t overly rely on software processing, it’s a superb choice.

Sony Xperia 5 IV was announced in September 2022 with an expected price of approximately $999 (Rs 79,499 in India). It has a 6.1-inch full HD+ OLED display with 1B colors and HDR-BT. 2020, a 120Hz refresh rate support. The phone is powered by a 4nm Qualcomm SM8475 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC with an Adreno 730 GPU. This smartphone is equipped with up to 8GB RAM with up to 128GB to 256GB of inbuilt storage. Sony Xperia 5 IV will be available in three colors- Green, Black, and Ecru White. It runs on the Android 12 OS. There are triple rear cameras with a 12MP primary camera with OIS support, 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto with an OIS support lens for photography and videography. Besides this, you get a 12MP selfie lens in this smartphone. Thankfully, both cameras can record 4K videos at 30 frames per second with 5-axis gyro-EIS support. Sensors on the phone include an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, compass sensor, color spectrum, and side-mounted fingerprint sensor. On most points, the Sony Xperia 5 IV is better than its predecessor. The screen is brighter, the battery is bigger and now supports wireless charging – and the processor is faster. The camera software and all the automated settings have also finally been sorted out. Another significant improvement over last year’s Xperia 5 is the front camera, which is now 12 megapixels and has been equipped with a larger Exmor RS sensor. And compared to big brother Xperia 1 IV, it’s of course also understandable that some compromises have to be made when pressing the price, and some of Sony’s choices make good sense. There’s no need for a phone with a 6.1-inch screen to have 4K resolution, and we didn’t miss the iToF sensor when we tested the camera either. However, it’s a shame that the Xperia 5 IV gets so extremely hot if you challenge the processor. Moreover, the fact that the Xperia 5 IV has to do without the special periscope technology in the telephoto lens, which had become one of the Xperia models’ distinguishing features, is a bit of a drag on the overall balance. Unfortunately, in these times of inflation, it’s also not surprising that the Xperia 5 IV is more expensive than its predecessor, but for about the same price you can buy a true compact flagship like the Asus Zenfone 9, and that might be worth considering instead of Sony’s compact top model. The Sony Xperia 5 IV is a must-buy if the camera’s pro capabilities tempt. In short, I think the Sony Xperia 5 V is a great phone. It's fast, the battery lasts for ages, it's comfortable to use one-handed, the camera is top-tier, and it has a few features that are rare these days, like the shutter button, SD card slot, and the 3.5mm audio port. Having said that, it's not for everyone. You'll need to know your way around more complex camera settings to take the best photos possible, it is relatively slow to charge, the screen might be too small for some people, and despite being cheaper than the Sony Xperia 1 V, it's still quite expensive. Weighing whether the Sony Xperia 5 V is a good buy or not will depend largely on how you use your phone day to day. Most importantly, whether you're into photography or videography, or whether you would like to learn. This will also be a good choice if you're looking for a small yet powerful handset, but less so if you're not necessarily looking for something more compact.

With the Xperia 5 V, Sony is to be commended for finally grabbing the bull by the horns and making the range more affordable. However, in doing so, Sony has arguably made the Xperia V 5 worse than its immediate predecessor, which is never a good look. While the range’s exemplary performance and battery life have been slightly improved upon, these weren’t areas that needed addressing. Conversely, the design is slightly clunkier, the screen is slightly worse, and the camera is less flexible than before – albeit with a better main sensor. Ultimately, while the Xperia 5 V is cheap for a Sony flagship, it’s arguably not cheap enough. Not when you can get so many formidable compact flagship phones (the Pixel 8, the Galaxy S23, the Xiaomi 13, the Zenfone 10) for similar or even less money, none of which feel quite as compromised as Sony’s latest.

The Sony Xperia 5V is a proper flagship smartphone that did bring some necessary improvements in every department, including design, display protection, performance, camera, and even battery but it was not without some downsides as well. The design improvements were needed and the smartphone needed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 had a bad reputation for being power-hungry and heating. So, the changes in the chipset are certainly appreciated and it has also resulted in better battery life. The downside is that the smartphone now lost its telephoto lens that was present in the Xperia 5IV. Apart from this, the refresh rate support could have been better and also the smartphone disappoints in terms of better nits brightness. Besides this, rest everything seems manageable. Not to mention, other smartphones do still have telephoto lenses and at a much lower price tag.

The Sony Xperia 5 V has well-suited saturation and color rendering. But the main downside is the presence of colored stripes when the device is viewed at an angle (rainbow effect). Although the variation in hue is not so important, the alternating pattern is really visible. The device is readable in indoor conditions, but the screen lacks brightness in outdoor conditions, especially under sunlight. In dark conditions, the device’s brightness is comfortable when the blue light filter is activated. The Xperia 5 V’s performance in video playback was dissatisfying in terms of contrast and brightness, and darker tones are generally difficult to discern in HDR10 videos. The Xperia 5 V, which is at the same price point as its predecessor, achieved the same score as the Xperia 5 IV. The newer model showed no overall improvement, and the maximum screen brightness was actually higher on the Xperia 5 IV.

However, the omission of a dedicated tele camera module on the latest model means that performance in the zoom category has actually decreased compared to last year’s device, and overall the Sony is not making it anywhere close to the top of our ranking. Still images captured with the Xperia 5 V showed good exposure in daylight and indoor conditions. Our testers also liked the well-controlled noise but criticized the limited dynamic range when shooting high-contrast scenes. Video mode offered a stable autofocus and effective brightness management in bright light. However, like in photo mode, dynamic range was limited, and video noise was noticeable in all light conditions.

The Sony Xperia 5 V is a mini version of the flagship phone and one of the best compact UK handsets of 2023 - but the £850 price ain't cheap! First up, that camera tech has switched to a dual lens setup. Sony has scrapped the dedicated telephoto shooter, but you do get the same Exmor-T hardware as the flagship for the Xperia 5 V primary cam. Along with Photo Pro, you can capture natural looking pics any time of day, with full DSLR controls. The Sony Xperia 5 V also boasts excellent battery life, along with dependable performance. I did see some networking lag when on mobile data and some juddering when shooting 4K video with the camera, but these appear to be software issues. If you're after a mini phone in 2023, this offers a similar experience to the 1 V. Creators and gamers have a lot to enjoy here, as well as anyone who streams a lot of music and movies.

As I suggested up top, the Sony Xperia 5 V is a small phone that has a big likelihood of splitting opinion: some will love its small stature and big power, while others will find its tall-and-narrow design tricky to use and some features too adjacent to the norm. Personally I find it too small, but I can appreciate there will be some who will love this phone for all its points of difference. The Xperia 5 V fills a niche that few others cater for in the market, which I massively respect. There's tonnes of power, so nothing foregone there, the battery life is impressive too, and the updated camera system – despite losing the zoom lens of its predecessor – now has a really strong main that delivers realistic and distinct pictures from an app that super-snappy in operation.

“Don’t mess with a working system,” as the saying goes, and Sony dutifully follows this recipe with the compact Sony Xperia 5 V, which as always is a slightly downgraded and thus cheaper version of this year’s excellent top model, the Sony Xperia 1 V. So you get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the new 48 megapixel camera with Exmor T sensor as well as the large 5,000 mAh battery with a long lifespan if you choose the Xperia 5 V, but you have to do without the telephoto lens and live with the fact that the compact phone tends to get a little too hot sometimes. In hindsight, however, you might wish that Sony would dare to experiment a little more than they currently do. The Xperia 5 V is, apart from a few changes, a faithful copy of its predecessor, and especially the angular design with the rather wide black screen border is starting to look old-fashioned here at the end of 2023.

The Xperia 5 V is a great little phone. That being said, smartphone evolution seems to be slowing down at alarming rates. A new camera sensor and a better chipset now justify launching a new model, while a couple of years ago it would've meant PR harakiri for the poor company brave enough to try this. Back to the Xperia 5 Mark V. There are a lot of pros to this phone, some of them on paper, others transcending pure specs and entering real life. The screen is great, the chipset is fast, and there are a whole bunch of now-oldschool options such as a 3.5mm audio jack, a microSD card, etc. The double-action shutter button is a thing every phone with a decent camera should have, and the new main camera sensor is great, no doubt about it. There's very capable pro-grade software on top of all this, and if you're patient and passionate enough, you can do wonders with the Xperia 5 V.

By adding a bit more mainstream appeal, but not sacrificing the features long-time fans have come to expect, the Xperia 5 V is a wonderfully well-rounded smartphone. It’ll please photographers who insist on manual controls, but computational cleverness and an auto-night mode mean novices can get in on the action too. Performance is comfortably on par with rivals, battery life is fantastic, and the software is streamlined. The display is a knockout too, even if the aspect ratio is still a bit “love it or hate it”. Not everyone will appreciate the camera’s more nuanced colour treatment either – but those wanting a break from the overly vivid snaps seen on other phones will be more than happy here. Price-wise it’s also very competitive, landing in the UK on par with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Google Pixel 7 Pro at £849 (although both can be had for less, having done the rounds for the best part of a year).

With a brief look at the Xperia 5 V, we couldn't draw conclusions regarding it. The Sony phone still features many impressive features in a single package, but its design is starting to show its age. Likewise, a few of the app additions look dated on top of the stock Android 13 interface, with some design touches inherited from the Xperia Z days. On the other hand, it is good to see that Sony is soldiering on features that were abandoned long ago on other flagship phones, like the headphone jack or microSD slot.
