The latest MSI Titan SLI is deeply impressive. However, it is clear the dual GTX 1080 GPUs have pushed the air cooling system to its limits. While the coolers have little trouble keeping the hardware below 90 degrees they can only do this by spinning the turbines at quite a rate and the consequence is noise. Lots of noise. As a portable solution, the Titan makes better sense than Asus GX800VH. But even so, it is big and heavy and you need to lug two large power bricks wherever you go.

MSI GT83VR 6RF Titan SLI – это, пожалуй, самый мощный аппарат среди современных лэптопов, и, несомненно, он является лидером в серии игровых устройств MSI. Несмотря на типичные формы ноутбука, устройство, скорее, является видоизмененной формой стационарного компьютера, нежели мобильным решением с общепринятыми стандартами. MSI GT83VR 6RF Titan SLI неимоверно тяжел, имеет крайне ограниченную автономность и небывалый уровень шума. Но это и потрясающий игровой вариант с увеличенными до небес возможностями и, соответственно, впечатляющим ценником. Его можно отнести к нишевым устройствам, ведь единичные продажи по $5800 так и останутся малочисленными, до выхода еще более мощного одноклассника.

Очень дорого, очень «крупногабаритно», не слишком в действительности похоже на ноутбук, по крайней мере, в привычном представлении среднего пользователя. И, тем не менее, если вы хотите максимальную игровую производительность именно в ноутбуке, то именно эта модель даст возможность наслаждаться играми с максимальным среди ноутбуков количеством кадров в секунду.

Когда деньги не имеют значения и производительность должна быть заоблачно высокой, в игру вступают большие ноутбуки класса "замена десктопа" (DTR) - такие, как MSI GT83VR. Этот 18-дюймовый ноутбук использует два быстрейших графических адаптера семейства NVIDIA Pascal. Высокому уровню соответствуют и другие его компоненты. Но справится ли с ними система охлаждения, вот в чём истинный вопрос.
Когда деньги не имеют значения и производительность должна быть заоблачно высокой, в игру вступают большие ноутбуки класса "замена десктопа" (DTR) - такие, как MSI GT83VR. We’re sure that the folks at MSI don’t think that GT83VR will become a great hit – its purpose is just to show that they have one of the best engineers out there and they can lead the market. MSI GT83VR Titan SLI has unmatchable performance (for a notebook) and we know that even though the price/performance ratio is far from the best, there will be many users who have more than enough money and just want to have the fastest notebook on the market. In case you’re one of them, the machine is great. GT83VR Titan has the best cooling system we’ve ever tested and really takes advantage of the pair of GTX 1070s / 1080s and the Core i7-6820HK processor.

As for the gaming performance, the MSI GT83VR 6RF Titan SLI’s dual GPUs were able to almost keep up with the desktop cards with just a difference of 6-8fps on average (Single GPU, 1080p). But for SLI benchmarks, the desktop cards again fared ahead on 1080p resolution. We know these cards are much more capable for higher resolutions. Interestingly, the GTX 1080s on the MSI GT83VR 6RF Titan SLI performed more or less the same as the desktop cards for 4K resolutions (SLI mode).

The MSI GT83VR Titan SLI isn't a gaming laptop, it is a monstrously powerful compact gaming desktop that is meant for serious gamers who do not want to be meddled with a wide selection of peripherals, yet wanting the flexibility to transport it around and enjoy desktop class performance whenever they go, it shows impressive performance in every dimension and you will definitely not miss using a desktop. The GT83 will cost you RM20,999, which isn't exactly a friendly price tag for most people out there, but considering that you get to have these powerful hardware in a laptop form factor, I would have to say that the GT83 is pretty much unrivalled and it is a reasonable price tag to pay for.

It might be the world’s most powerful gaming laptop, yet the choice of a low resolution, low refresh rate display is puzzling to say the least. If all you care about is stratospheric frame rates, then it’s a fine solution, but it seems a shame to waste all that horsepower on a HD resolution. Hopefully the next version has a 2560 x 1440, 120Hz panel at the least.

A study in what is possible. With the 18-inch GT83VR 7RF, the gaming expert MSI shows what is currently technically possible (in terms of performance) in the notebook segment. Intel's most powerful mobile Kaby Lake processor is accompanied by two Pascal GPUs. However, the price is as extreme as the speed: over 5000 Euros (~$5600) makes the GT83VR 7RF an expensive toy for enthusiasts.

Essentially you need an external 4K display to use the full potential of this gaming behemoth, which is the main drawback keeping it from earning our top accolades.

The GT83VR Titan is an upgrade over the original GT80 Titan. The newer components are faster, and the excellent chassis has stayed the same, but the competition, even from MSI’s own gaming laptops, has simply moved quicker than this 18.4-inch behemoth could keep up with, and that’s a shame, because it’s still a well-built, powerful system. It just needs a better display to justify the price tag.

The biggest issue that will stop most people from buying the GT83VR is price. This laptop starts at $4,400 for a base model without an SSD, and to do this laptop justice with proper fast storage, you’ll need to spend more like $4,800. That’s a lot of money to spend on a single system, putting the GT83VR out of the reach of most consumers. We'd have found the price more palatable if a 4K or G-Sync display would have been part of the package. But ultimately, if you want the best possible hardware in a laptop form factor, I guess you need to pay a hefty premium.

In essence, to fully appreciate the GT83VR’s Titan SLI graphics cards, you’ll need to hook it up to a 4K display or a whole brace of 1080p ones. That rather defeats the purpose of getting a notebook by doing that, since it’s no longer a self-contained package once you plug in a display. This is made gawkier by the fact that the GT83VR is so big—you’ll need to mount your monitor up rather high to see over the GT83VR’s built-in display, or use the laptop with the screen folded shut and with an external keyboard and mouse. (In other words, just like a laptop-shaped conventional desktop.)
