The screen looks fantastic and you'll be able to run AAA titles at max settings without compromise. The only downside is the noise if the fans when they inevitably kick in and the too-hot-to-handle temperature, but as long as you have a pair of headphones and somewhere other than your lap to rest it, it's not too much of a problem. If size matters - even on the go - you can't go wrong with the Alienware m17 and it won't break the bank.

Even some of the forward-thinking features had their issues: the Tobii eye tracker, for example, which sounds awesome, but left this reviewer cold, and the trackpad, which had issues with basic fingertip tracking.

Lisa Gade reviews the Alienware m17 R3, the 2020 update to their slim and light 17.3” gaming laptop. Though Alienware continues with the Legend design, they’ve make quite a few changes inside, including improved cooling with a vapor chamber for the GPU and more VRMs, a bigger battery, a deeper travel 1.7mm keyboard and more. The R3 runs Windows 10 on Intel 10th gen, 45 watt Core i7 and Core i9 HK CPUs with up to NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super GPUs (full mobile, not max-Q). There are 144Hz and 300Hz full HD displays and a 100% Adobe RGB 4K display to choose from, up to 32GB RAM, 3 M.2 SSD slots with optional RAID0, WiFi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet, Thunderbolt 3, a microSD card slot and a host of other ports. The amount of power tucked under the hood is extremely impressive and should deliver the kind of AAA gaming experiences I seek. The only drawback I can foresee with this laptop is the price of higher-end models. $1,599 for the base model alone may be too much for the average gamer. I can only imagine how much beefier rigs will cost. With that said, those who can afford the more expensive models should get their money’s worth. The Alienware m17 R5 Ryzen Edition is clearly a gaming laptop made by gamers, for gamers. It may indeed land in our best gaming laptops of 2022.

The collaboration has lived up to the hype and did just what they set out to do, create the most powerful 17-inch AMD gaming laptop in the Alienware m15 R5. Both the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and Radeon RX 6850M XT GPU deliver big numbers on performance, enough to give their Intel and Nvidia-powered competitors a run for their money more often than not. And that’s with no small help from the AMD Advantage software suite designed to squeeze every bit of performance out of the system no matter the situation. The lovely 4K display, powerful speakers, ultra-low profile Cherry MX are the literal cherry on top. Oh and with that Legend 2.0 design, it’s just a stunner of a system. However, for $2,799, I definitely want a 1080p webcam and for the system to be a bit more dominant with that performance. I want to win all the time, not 80% of the exchange.
