Even still, I’m ultimately impressed with the Magic Pad 2. Honor’s latest take on the Android tablet pairs powerful hardware with a tidy software package and looks really quite sublime while doing it. The AI features are handy but not overbearing, and I’m thankful Honor hasn’t found a reason to push a full generative AI chatbot into its products – not yet, at least. The only real downside is the lack of software support, which might make some think twice. If you want more longevity, the OnePlus Pad 2 goes for the same £500 and is set for three years of OS updates and four years of security patches. Otherwise, there’s very little to dislike about the Magic Pad 2; between the price and the performance, it’s a cracking bit of hardware.

Honor seems to be going to war with the big boys in terms of design, quality, and pricing — so naturally there are options from both Apple and Samsung at the €599 (roughly $660) price point Honor has picked. Having used both an iPad Air and Honor's MagicPad 2 at home, and messed around with various Samsung Galaxy Tabs at trade shows, I genuinely prefer Honor's effort and could probably argue ways in which it can give an iPad Pro a run for its money. In summary, the display is beautiful, the speakers are superb, the office tools are class-leading, battery life is abundant, and the accessories enhance the experience — even if they do have their faults.

The Honor MagicPad 3 offers good value for money considering the screen size, power and the formidable battery. Bundled in with that keyboard and pencil it’s a great offer: once those offers expire and this tablet returns to full price, it will face tough competition from the OnePlus Pad 3. I’ve enjoyed working and watching on the MagicPad 3 and while the loss of an OLED display is a shame, I think there’s enough to compensate for that. At the same time, Honor was the cheap OLED tablet of choice with the MagicPad 2; that distinction has now gone and there’s a little less to help Honor’s tablet stand out among the best tablets on offer.

Both the OnePlus Pad 3 and the iPad Air are better choices if you want to get the most powerful performance for your money, but neither gets you the keyboard case and stylus for as little money as the Honor Magic Pad 3. Plus, the Honor is still a nippy performer, and will likely be plenty fast for most users. Beyond that, it offers some of the best battery life of any tablet around and an impressive seven years of software support, so it will last you a good long time in more ways than one. It’s still a shame that Honor chose to revert from OLED to LCD for the display, but there’s no denying that the Magic Pad 3 offers more than enough quality to make up for it.

But to be fair, this LCD panel is excellent, gets up to 165Hz in refresh rate, and the rest of the tablet improves everywhere, including the keyboard which now has a large trackpad.
