Word on the street is that the MacBook Air and more powerful variants of the MacBook Pro will not arrive until sometime early next year. But if time is on your side, the question to ask is what you would achieve by waiting. If you need more performance than the M5, then obviously, you’ll need to wait for the M5 Pro or M5 Max versions.

The M5 MacBook Pro carries on that complicated legacy, and even with the M5 there are still lots of people for whom one of the M4 MacBook Airs is just going to be a better fit. But it is a very nice laptop, and if your screen is the most important part of your laptop, this low-end Pro does make a decent case for itself. It’s frustrating that the matte display is a $150 upcharge, but it’s an option you can’t get on an Air, and the improved display panel and faster ProMotion refresh rate make scrolling and animations all look smoother and more fluid than they do on an Air’s screen.

It would be nice to see Apple get a bit bolder with a design shake-up for future releases, especially when it comes to some of the older technology (Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6E) that it still uses.

EN→RUIt wasn't the big redesign we were hoping for this time last year, when Apple rolled out its M4 models of the MacBook Pro. In fact, there wasn't a redesign at all. This generation of the 14-inch MacBook Pro is identical to the 2024 model (prices remain unchanged as well) with a single exception -- it incorporates the M5 processor, which debuted this fall. On one hand, my testing shows the chip's upgraded GPU architecture delivers big performance improvements over the M4 in the narrow areas where it applies, namely on-GPU processing for AI (notably image generation) and ray-traced graphics. Those go along with Apple's typical generation-over-generation performance improvements. So, as expected, one of the best-performing consumer CPUs just got better, bringing a top-performing laptop in its wake.
