For what it is, the Moto G04 doesn’t actively do too much wrong; most aspects fall into the realm of “acceptable” and there’s even the odd bright spot such as a wealth of user-friendly features and decent battery life. Even the things I didn’t love about it – performance, cameras and display quality – are all understandable sacrifices at this price. If the Moto G04 was getting even a single OS update, I might have been tempted to recommend it above the G13, purely to hop up to Android 15. As it is, however, there’s simply not enough here to justify this phone existing. If you want a bargain cheap phone, I’d spend the extra few pounds and pick up the Moto G13 – battery life may be a little weaker, but it surpasses the G04 in every other way, offering much better value for your money.

The Motorola G04 makes good on its promise to be a cheap and capable media machine. Its paired-down specifications help the large battery power through the day. More convenient charging would have been a nice bonus, but find the time to juice it back up and it’s a non-issue. Where it falters is in the screen department. It’s large and colourful enough for the price, but it struggles in bright conditions, which can quickly invalidate the desire to watch shows or read books while out and about. Relatively poor viewing angles can make getting comfy with a movie a little tricky, too: especially with more than one person. Still, at £89.99, it’s hard to judge the Motorola G04 too harshly. It’s an absolute bargain for what it is: it just struggles to stand out as the media device the marketing would have you believe. A second-hand Sony Xperia 10 V would be a better option, with TCL and Xiaomi both offering tighter devices at not too much higher a price. It’s a great budget handset, but not a brilliant lifestyle device.

Another option, with a name close to that of the Nokia, is the Realme C35, which you can pick up for around £150 and comes with a Full HD display and a decent main camera. It brings a great display with a decent refresh rate, chipset, and outstanding battery life. These features and performance set it a class apart from all the other smartphones in the same price category. The camera or the chipset could have been better but at this price, there’s hardly anything to complain about. The Indian price of the smartphone is even cheaper than its European launch and that’s one of the reasons why it is becoming such a delight among budget users in India. On top of that, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and support for expandable storage. All these features also compensate for the lack of 5G connectivity, which would have certainly increased the cost of the smartphone.

The Mediatek chipset stuffed in here can cope with simple everyday fare, and a little bit of gamer action when needed. PubG etc run okay, but don’t try anything more complex. The Motorola Moto G05 does boast brilliant battery life however, so you can keep going all weekend if you need to. As with other budget smartphones I've reviewed, this mobile has rather basic camera tech. If conditions are just right and you know what you're doing, you can force a decent looking photo from the Motorola Moto G05. However, it struggles in HDR scenes or when there's any kind of motion.

There just isn’t enough oomph in the Moto G06 to recommend this device to anyone but those least likely to use it. For the price, the battery makes it a half-decent device for a vulnerable person to keep close for emergencies. However, without default configurations for accompanying accessibility features, it’s still a tough sell compared to the myriad other options on the market, especially in the second-hand/refurbished space. It’s the raw performance that limits its appeal, rendering an already iffy camera too sluggish for practical use, and general usability is annoyingly inconsistent. Just when you think it’s settled into its routine, it takes a little too long to launch an app, seconds to save a shot, and moments to think about the simplest of taps. At the promo price of £89.99, it’s a good enough device for the most basic smartphone needs.

Unboxing the Motorola G06 Power, one of the best budget-friendly smartphones under £100 packing incredible battery life. Performance is seriously limited while the camera is basic, of course. But the Motorola G06 Power is a strong option if your needs are simple and you want battery for days. Starting with design, I really like the look of this wallet-friendly smartphone. The Motorola G06 Power may have quite chonky bezels, but the faux leather back is attractive and adds some much-needed grip. After all, this isn't a compact device by any means. You've got a mostly stock version of Android, sadly devoid of many of the usual excellent Moto apps and extras. Still, the Motorola G06 Power has that gesture support on board, phew! Gaming is best avoided as even the likes of Call of Duty run with a sludgy frame rate and are frustratingly unresponsive. But the battery life is among the very best budget phones in 2025, so the Power is a great option for those weekend trips away.
