Where the XPS 13 Plus promised portable power, the XPS 13 promises portable… less power, I guess? Our $1,149 unit includes a Core i5-1230U, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. This unit, however, appears to be sold out on Dell’s website currently. What you can buy is a Core i7-1250U, which is currently $1,199 for a 16GB / 512GB / touchscreen model. A similarly configured M2 MacBook Air is currently selling for $1,699, which makes Dell’s pricing attractive — though the performance benefits Apple delivers for that extra price aren’t insignificant, as we’ll soon discuss. The U-series XPS is a significant step down from the P-series XPS 13 Plus (which was already losing badly to the MacBook) when it comes to the raw numbers. Benchmark scores were lower almost across the board. Especially stark was the 30-minute loop of Cinebench, where the XPS 13 got close to 50 percent of the Plus’s score. It’s clear that the XPS 13’s performance changed significantly after the first 10-minute run.

Dell has split the iconic XPS 13 Ultrabook into 2 lines for 2022. We look at both the standard XPS 13 (9315) and XPS 13 Plus (9320) in this review. Both are extremely compact CNC aluminum 13.4” laptops with 16:10 aspect ratio narrow bezel displays, Wi-Fi 6E, Thunderbolt 4 and Intel Iris Xe graphics. The Plus offers higher end display options including our 3.5K OLED and 4K IPS, and it has a faster CPU. The Plus sports a new keyboard design and an interesting borderless trackpad too. The XPS 13 standard edition fights back with a lower price tag and a more conventional keyboard.

At first blush, the Dell XPS 13 is an attractive ultraportable for its compact design, thin profile, and unique tinted aluminum material. As soon as you attempt to raise the lid, however, the bloom is off the rose. It’s frustratingly difficult to perform the simple act of opening the laptop. In addition, competing ultrabooks offer better performance and longer battery life than the XPS 13 and its 12th-gen Core i5 chip. Further, the 720p webcam is behind the times and, with only two ports, you are forced to keep track of two tiny adapters. For roughly the same price, the slightly larger but still highly portable HP Pavilion 14 Plus offers better performance along with an OLED display and 1080p webcam.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Dell XPS 13. For 2022, Dell split the XPS 13 into two distinctly different models: the more affordable XPS 13 and the expensive XPS 13 Plus. I feared the base XPS 13 would become a shadow of its former self, but the opposite is true. The base XPS 13 better represents the original mission of the laptop; it’s a premium ultraportable with excellent battery life, a durable design, and a great user experience. Performance is modest but remains fine for day-to-day use and light creative workloads. The result is a laptop that’s great for travel yet enjoyable to use for hours on end. There are a few flaws to note. The lack of physical connectivity, including an absent headphone jack, will turn off those who prefer wired peripherals. The laptop’s webcam, microphone, and display are underwhelming; some competitors in this space offer a 1080p webcam, OLED display, or both. These problems are excused by Dell’s modest pricing, however. It undercuts most premium Windows alternatives, and often by a couple hundred dollars.

Dell's XPS 13 line does one big thing really well -- it's a slim, well-made Windows laptop that kinda gives you the look and feel of a MacBook Air, but running Windows rather than MacOS. And for the past several years, it's filled exactly that niche. That's why it remains one of my favorite Windows laptops. Even better, it starts at $829, well less than even the older M1 MacBook Air, which is still a great laptop but is also two years old at this point. The newer M2 MacBook Air starts at $1,199 and goes up from there. MacBook comparisons aside (although they are inevitable), the latest XPS 13 stands on its own as a great minimalist Windows laptop. It's reasonably thin (around 14mm), light (2.6 pounds) and has a good 13.4-inch full HD display. My spouse, no stranger to these things, saw the new XPS 13 and said, unsolicited, "That's very Apple-y. Good job, Dell."

But the XPS 13 (2022) deserves to be judged on its own merits, rather than solely in comparison to the Dell XPS 13 (Late 2020), this model's immediate predecessor. This is especially the case since that model is arguably the best laptop in its class. Still, while we'll get around to weighing the XPS 13 (2022) objectively a bit later, it is important to acknowledge that the new Dell XPS 13 comes with a pedigree and that can't be ignored. In this regard, the XPS 13 (2022) outperforms the model it's replacing in some key areas, but it falls short in others. How you're going to feel about the new XPS 13 is going to depend entirely on where your concerns fall between the two, whether or not some of these are entirely in Dell's control.

In a lot of ways, the new XPS 13 feels like a response to the overwhelming success of the M1 MacBook Air. While the rest of the Windows ecosystem has continued on, almost pretending as if the MacBook Air didn’t exist, the XPS 13 feels like it’s actually been designed around beating Apple at its own game. It’s still not as powerful or long-lasting as the MacBook Air, but at $829, it’s a killer deal. I love that Dell wasn’t afraid of using the price as an attack against Apple, even if it meant making a few compromises along the way. If I could find a way to add back in a headphone jack, I’d have few qualms recommending this laptop to most people shopping for a Windows laptop. But even as it is, you won’t find another premium laptop under $1,000 quite this good.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 we’ve all come to know and love is no more, may it rest in peace. Sorry no, it’s not that Dell has retired the line. On the contrary, it looks like it’s here to stay judging by the recent updates the manufacturer has made on it: case in point, its form factor, which leads me to my original statement. Dell has taken that gorgeous svelte convertible form factor that we all loved about the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 – you know, the one that gave us that gorgeous, luxurious shell and the four-modes-in-one design – and raised us a Windows 11-powered Lenovo Chromebook Duet instead. By that, I mean that you’re getting a tablet with a folio attached as opposed to an actual laptop. With this new detachable form, however, come some sacrifices. There are only two ports on hand – specifically, two USB-C ports – and the battery has been downgraded from about 10 hours to a mere eight. Rubbing salt in the wound, the folio isn’t only flimsy; it also has a steep learning curve if you’re used to the traditional laptop design.

I’m not a fan of tablets, especially tablets posing as laptop replacements. I spent a few days working on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and I’ve got to say, I didn’t hate it, but I’m still not sold on the idea. For $1,049, you get a system with an eye-catching lightweight design, a bright display and surprisingly good graphics performance (for integrated graphics) and a pair of excellent webcams. However, for the price, I want slightly more power, a more vivid display, a few more ports and definitely longer battery life. If you want a laptop with those things, I’d point you in the direction of the HP Spectre x360 14 2-in-1 or any of the laptops on our best 2-in-1 page. But if you’re looking for an extremely lightweight laptop with solid performance for working on the go, you should definitely consider the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.

As a complete set, the Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1 is kinda weird. By default, Dell has enabled the feature whereby you can just open the laptop lid and it’ll automatically turn on. In this case, instead of a laptop lid, you open the folio case. Unfortunately for me, the flap opened itself a little bit in my bag and the device turned on by itself in my bag. With that said, you can disable this feature in the BIOS. I ended up not disabling it since I can use Windows Hello to instantly unlock the device when it boots up. Very convenient. The XPS Stylus is also very poorly attached to the tablet, and a slight bump can cause the entire pen to drop. I don’t even want to think about putting it in my bag as I know it’ll end up at some unknown crevice. The general performance of doing something on this tablet – well, I’ll just say that it’s great for web browsing, Spotify, and Netflix – but does require some patience if we’re going to do something more intensive. Launching Dell’s own utilities also takes some time, by the way.

The real problem with the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the same problem with the Surface tablets: Windows just isn't that great on a tablet. Interacting with it is tedious. Even the most recent version of Android offers a better experience. Most of the time when I used the Dell as a tablet, I lasted about ten minutes before I found myself muttering something about a damn keyboard. Still, if you're sold on a Windows tablet, the XPS 13 makes a compelling, cheaper alternative to a Surface.

The Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1 proves that the best way to do a convertible laptop is to be a tablet. With its detachable form factor and a lightweight folio case, the Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1 is very easy to carry and it makes not many compromises on the practicality side. The folio keyboard isn't quite as comfortable as a standard laptop keyboard but for most people, it does the job well. You will also like the display as well as the overall performance from the 12th Gen Intel U-series processor. Battery life could have been better but considering that the OS is Windows 11, Dell has done a good job of extracting decent stamina. At Rs. 139,990, the Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1 is quite expensive for a 2-in-1 and it competes directly with the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 with the 12th Gen Intel chips. The Surface Pro 9 is as good a performer as the Dell but the folio keyboard experience is worse. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is another great option in this bracket with an superb display, longer battery life, and better speakers but its iPadOS 16 isn't as capable as Windows 11. Hence, the Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1 is easily the best 2-in-1 laptop you can buy today and becomes our top recommendation.

The Surface Pro 9 isn’t the perfect Windows tablet. Frankly, such an animal doesn’t exist. But the Surface Pro 9 ends up being a better overall device than the XPS 13 2-in-1. The latter is a fine detachable 2-in-1, but it doesn’t provide any reason other than the price to choose it over Microsoft’s tablet. The XPS 13 2-in-1 isn’t as comfortable to use in tablet mode or with the keyboard attached, and it’s slower with less battery life. If you’re buying a tablet primarily for inking, then the Surface Pro 9 is a better experience there as well. Then again, price does matter. At the same $1,000 price, you get four times the storage with the XPS 13 2-in-1 than the Surface Pro 9, and when configured with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, the Dell is $700 less. That’s hard to ignore. But in the final analysis, the XPS 13 2-in-1 isn’t inexpensive enough to make up for its weaknesses, and the Surface Pro 9’s being so expensive doesn’t hand Dell’s tablet a recommendation.

The 2-in-1 format is not for everyone but, if you’re sold on the concept of a detachable folio cover then the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 has a lot to offer. It’s an improvement on the Microsoft Surface Pro range in some areas but not others, so be sure to compare them to see which is the best fit for your needs. Keep in mind, the 2-in-1 design often demands compromises in terms of price, weight and performance compared to a traditional laptop, or even a 2-in-1 with a keyboard that swivels back rather than detaches. Also, consider whether an Apple or Android tablet might better suit your requirements than a Windows device (although it’s possible to run Android apps on Windows 11). If you’re a keyboard warrior who would rarely use the device in tablet mode, then a 2-in-1 is probably not for you but it’s worth checking out the rest of the Dell XPS range.

It’s a mid-market option in terms of price, then, and it’s pretty ordinary in other departments too. The processor can run everyday office and creative workloads but nothing tougher, and the display is a bright, bold touchscreen without the colour breadth for top-end design situations. The battery barely lasts all day. Elsewhere, the XPS has a good keyboard but it’s heavier, thicker and arguably less versatile than rivals, and the screen is robust and well-equipped with cameras – but it barely has any ports. It’s a tricky sell. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is a good choice if you want an everyday detachable device rather than a 360-hinge hybrid. But no matter your intentions for a new convertible or laptop, you’ll probably find a better option elsewhere.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is a nicely designed, well-built tablet with many features, decent battery life, and adequate performance. But it is expensive: you can pick up a Surface Pro 8 with a keyboard and stylus(opens in new tab) for less than the XPS 13 2-in-1 tablet alone. It is about the same price as the just launched Surface Pro 9, which we have yet to be able to review. The two are so similar, though, that I expect they will have the same problem: they are great tablets but could be better laptops. So, unless you need the tablet experience, go with the XPS 13 or the XPS 13 Pro and get more bang for your buck.

Графические процессоры этой категории производительности справятся со многими играми, если не гнаться за максимальным разрешением и качеством картинки. Сравнительно умеренное энергопотребление таких GPU обеспечит увеличение времени автономной работы.

Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Видеопроцессор, встраиваемый в некоторые процессоры Intel семейства Tiger Lake. Задействует графическую архитектуру Intel двенадцатого поколения, она же Xe. Располагает 80 кластерами унифицированных шейдеров (EU). Тактовая частота зависит от конкретной модели ЦП. Изготавливается на 10-нанометровом производстве Intel в его втором поколении.

Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Видеопроцессор, встраиваемый в некоторые процессоры Intel семейства Tiger Lake. Задействует новую архитектуру 12 поколения, располагает 96 кластерами унифицированных шейдеров. Максимальная частота разная в зависимости от конкретного ЦП. Изготавливается Xe Graphics G7 на 10-нанометровом производстве Intel во втором поколении.
