In a rare move (and motivated by the vast gulf in prices) I’m going to separate the 256GB model from the 512GB for the verdict. The latter is absolutely not worth buying, it costs too much and offers too little, falling well short of other options in that price range. The 256GB model has more appeal to it, with its wonderfully slight and lightweight build being the main draw – though performance, battery life and display quality aren’t bad either. And, of course, that excellent software support remains a key advantage. Samsung fans looking to avoid the high prices of the S series will find the A57 to be the ideal, cost-conscious alternative. If you’re brand-agnostic, however, the Google Pixel 10a is better value overall. The cameras are stronger, the battery lasts longer and you get an extra year of software support.

We’re not thrilled with Samsung bumping up the price, given the relative lack of advancement and the existence of better-performing or more exciting rivals for less money. An awful lot of people simply want the best Samsung phone within their budget, however, and it’s never been easier to recommend the top Galaxy A model as the one that most people should get. If you want to save money, look to the Galaxy A37 instead.

What’s a little harder to accept is that if you want more storage than the 256GB base model, you’re going to need nearly £/$200 more to get it. And at that price, you can get a much better phone from just about anyone.

It’s a bit of a funny situation, but the truth of the Samsung Galaxy A57 is that while it’s basically a cheaper alternative to the top dogs, it mostly makes sense as a buy if you don’t care too much about value. Most other phones at this price are far more powerful, and some are more overtly feature-packed. And while Samsung hits back with top-quality construction and materials, that may not quite be enough for some. Highlights include a solid primary camera and good speakers, but Samsung really needs to get up-to-date with battery tech to make the next Galaxy A phone like this a real competitor for the less geeky shopper working to a sensible budget (same can be said of the S series too). That said, though, I’ve enjoyed using the Galaxy A57 more than some of its more value-packed rivals because of that extra attention to the basics I notice every day. And that'll go a long way for many prospective buyers.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE is a far better phone in most respects than the Galaxy A57, offering an enhanced software experience, improved performance, and better cameras, along with the Samsung Galaxy S series brand.

It’s basically better in every way and yet the S25 FE is available at only around RM2,200, though the listings seem a bit sussy. Either way, the Samsung Galaxy A57 is a surprisingly good phone and the retail price is also rather enticing, but the S25 FE’s price has dropped so much that we can’t ignore it.

Well, I really like that new slimmer design, which makes this Galaxy smartphone almost as lightweight as the S25 Edge. The Samsung Galaxy A57 5G still packs in a 5000mAh battery, same as the Ultra flagship. Although the lack of wireless charging highlights the more budget-friendly experience here. The Samsung A57 is powered by an Exynos 1680 chipset and this can handle a bit of gaming when needed, although the likes of the Poco X8 Pro Max is more capable. Likewise, the camera tech here is recycled wholesale from the old A56, with some of the same issues as the S26 series.

The Galaxy A57 looks and feels like an S-series phone, no two words about that. It has an improved design and build, slimmer screen bezels, and lighter body. It's become more refined, and it feels more premium. The new Exynos chip with LPDDR5X RAM is alright - it provides balanced everyday performance, but the competition has upped its game a lot this year, and the A57 is trailing behind. The camera department turned out to be surprisingly good, with excellent main and selfie cameras. The ultrawide shooter did okay, but the macro lens is there just for earning the "triple-camera" title for the A57. Finally, the battery life is now improved despite the identical battery capacity as last year. The One UI on the A57 is a typical Samsung affair minus DeX and a few AI tricks. The A57 is a good phone, all things considered, but not at that price. The Galaxy A56 is almost the same phone at half the price, while the Galaxy S25 FE is a flagship device with a similar tag. The Galaxy A57 is a very balanced phone with hardly any shortcomings so it's well worth a recommendation, but until it gets a price cut, it will remain a hard sell.

Storage options go up to 512GB, but there is no microSD card slot.

There's a lot to like about both the Galaxy A57 and the Galaxy A37. Both are smart-looking phones with large batteries, fast charging and some solid camera hardware hiding under the surface. Not to mention the fact that Samsung has added a lot of new AI features that you would otherwise only be able to get on the Galaxy S26 series. The fact that Samsung has increased the price still stings, especially since it seems to be affecting the American market more than the U.K. For the extra money, you'd hope Samsung would offer a little bit more of a substantial upgrade, but that isn't the case, especially not for the Galaxy A57.
