The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a prime example of what you can expect from an entry-level gaming laptop under $700. It's just enough to get you going with its midrange AMD processor and a slightly better-than-basic Nvidia graphics chip. It also has a fair amount of ports so you can easily connect to an external display and a keyboard and mouse for desktop gaming. The IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a fine choice for the money, whether this is your first gaming laptop or you're a casual gamer looking to play undemanding games in between doing office or school work. As with all laptops, however, the more you can invest in components up front, the better off you'll be in the long run. Increasing your budget to $1,000 can get you a lot more gaming performance for your dollar, especially if you can hit the right deal. But not everyone has the extra money, in which case the IdeaPad Gaming 3 at least gives you a solid starting point with room for more storage and memory.

We were universally unimpressed with Lenovo's gaming laptop across most of the tests and benchmarks we put it through. A Ryzen 5 6600H processor paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 means you'll have to make sacrifices in image quality in many games to achieve strong performance. Competing budget gaming laptops that cost $100-200 more can give you the best of both worlds: a stronger processor and graphics setup (with at least a GeForce RTX 3060) that deliver solid frame rates at top-quality settings. If price is your primary concern, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 only makes sense if you can find it on sale for half to two-thirds of its regular $900 price, and you'll still likely have to do some annoying jostling in your favorite games settings' to achieve good frame rates. But even if you're fine with that trade-off, the rest of the IdeaPad Gaming 3's setup is just uninspiring.

The IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a decent gaming laptop if you’re on a tight budget, but you need to be aware of what you’re paying for. This can run most AAA games at low to medium graphics settings with decent performance, but the display is lacking in both color depth and brightness. If that’s something you care about, you’ll have to spend some extra cash to be satisfied. Otherwise, this laptop features above-average performance for its price category and benefits greatly from that low cost of entry. You’re also in for a solid speaker system and long-lasting battery life, but don’t expect a miracle. We recommend the Acer Nitro 5 if you’re willing to spend a little more for extra power. If not, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a decent choice for those on the lookout for something inexpensive that can play modern games.

You're not going to get a spectacular screen and a speedy GeForce RTX 3070 or 3080 GPU in an under-$1,000 gaming laptop. However, you can reasonably hope for a decent display and an RTX 3050 Ti, if not an RTX 3060. Even without those things, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 might fill a niche for bargain hunters if it had a 512GB SSD instead of just 256GB, but, as is, there's just not much to recommend it. Unless it gets an upgrade or a price cut, we'll pass.

As we saw in this review, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15″, 2022) is a well-engineered laptop. To be honest, Lenovo hasn’t done anything revolutionary. It just got everything learned from the Legion series, plus some proven technologies seen elsewhere, and combined it inside an inexpensive offering for the low-to-medium-budget gamer. All in all, the laptop doesn’t disappoint. Its build quality is not the best, but it is better than what we expected. Yes, the lid is bouncy, but the rest of the device is so good, that we can let that one slide.
