Huawei has now furnished the multimedia notebook MateBook 16 with an Intel processor and calls it the MateBook 16s. Buyers also get a Thunderbolt 4 port, a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi 6E module, and a bit more key travel. Other than that, there isn't much of a difference. Does that justify a price increase of 500 Euro (US$510)?

Но даже если при выборе вы отталкиваетесь не от бренда, Huawei MateBook 16s вас точно не разочарует. Это надежный 16-дюймовый ноутбук с классным экраном. Не только из-за цветопередачи, но и соотношение сторон 3:2 отлично подходит для работы. К производительности тоже никаких вопросов. Много портов, Thunderbolt 4, отличная FHD-камера с умными алгоритмами. Прекрасный вариант для удаленной работы. Без разницы, куда вас занесет — в кровать или в другую страну, за большим экраном удобнее работать. И если раньше большие ноутбуки отпугивали, то теперь они тоньше и легче чем популярные 15,6-дюймовые модели пару лет назад, приближаются к 14-дюймовых моделям. О чем еще мало говорят, а зря: адаптеры для зарядки. Мало кто учитывает эти 200−300 г. Адаптер к Huawei MateBook 16s компактный. В сумме получается как бизнесовая «четырка» с могучим блоком питания. Так зачем брать меньше, если не видно разницы?

I have used my fair share of Huawei laptops and I have to say that the MateBook 16s is one of my favourites. I really enjoy the large screen, as it allows me to have multiple tabs open at once to work, and it performs great when I want to binge Netflix and YouTube after work. The 12th-Gen Intel H-Series processor is also ridiculously fast for a laptop in this price range, proving itself in the speedy load-up times and ability to run multiple software and apps at once without faltering. This does come at the price of the battery, which isn’t the best I’ve seen, but can be solved as long as you’re near to a plug socket. In my opinion, this is the best 16-inch laptop you can get from Huawei right now, and I would implore anyone interested in a large-screened machine to give this one a chance.

For a go-anywhere machine with a sizeable screen, the MateBook 16S hits a lot of the right notes. It’s well-built, has a colourful display, and can be equipped with the kind of power that would embarrass many desktop PCs. At £1499 for an M1 MacBook-baiting Core i9 model, it also looks like stonkingly good value for anyone that can take advantage of all that CPU muscle. In real-world use though, the chip is rarely able to fully flex its muscles. Anyone in need of so much power will probably also want a dedicated GPU, which isn’t an option here. That makes the i7 version our laptop of choice – it’s still mighty quick, and matches the i9 version everywhere else. Creatives that need more than Photoshop might be underwhelmed, but the Matebook 16S absolutely earns a place on the shortlist for other workers that aren’t chained to an office desk.

Despite only spending a short time with the Huawei MateBook 16s, I thought it was a solid laptop and ideal choice for anyone looking to engage in entry-level creative work on a large screen. The large 16-inch screen looked bright and vibrant, making it ideal for photo editing, multitasking ands even Netflix binigng sessions. I do think the starting price of £1299.99 is a little steep given the lack of a discrete GPU, but the 12th-Gen H-Series Intel processor and Intel Evo certification should make it a speedy device that I would expect can breeze though productivity tasks. While I wouldn’t recommend it to any professional or gamer seeing a high-end graphics performance, I think it will work well for anyone after a large portable device with generous screen space.

While I wouldn’t recommend it to any professional or gamer seeing a high-end graphics performance, I think it will work well for anyone after a large portable device with generous screen space.

For a go-anywhere machine with a sizeable screen, the MateBook 16S hits a lot of the right notes. It’s well-built, has a colourful display, and can be equipped with the kind of power that would embarrass many desktop PCs. At £1499 for an M1 MacBook-baiting Core i9 model, it also looks like stonkingly good value for anyone that can take advantage of all that CPU muscle. We won’t be giving it a star rating until we’ve had a chance to do some proper testing (to see if the cooling system really can tame Intel’s toasty new silicon) and given the battery a real workout. Right now, though, it absolutely earns a place on the shortlist for creatives and workers that aren’t chained to an office desk.

For those who need the extra screen space, the 3:2 display here will be a big part of the 16s’s draw. It’s expansive, well proportioned, and carefully colour-calibrated, and is certainly one of the biggest and best displays available at the price. CPU performance is also exceptional thanks to Intel’s 12th-gen H-series chips, making this a powerful performer. The lack of a dedicated GPU option will undeniably limit the appeal to serious video editors or anyone hoping to use this to game, but don’t write off the integrated Iris Xe graphics, which provide plenty of oomph for office work and even photo editing and graphic design. If you want a 4K OLED panel or an Nvidia RTX GPU then the MateBook 16s won’t be for you – but then nothing at this price point will be. But with plenty of power in a relatively compact chassis, and all at a competitive price...

The Huawei MateBook 16s is certainly a striking laptop in terms of design. It offers a premium look and feel, with plenty of features on board. The large touch display is great and responsive and there's plenty of punch in terms of colours, while the surrounding slim bezels make for a lovely viewing experience. Whilst we couldn't test the performance of the MateBook 16s during our brief time with it, it's certainly a device we are looking forward to trying out properly.
