For those looking for a smartly styled, capable machine, look to the Spectre. The base price of $1,000 is no toe-dip in the pool, but it’s well worth it for the HP. If you need more muscle, the version sporting a better screen and Intel Core i7 will set you back $1,400. Again, well worth it, and considering the screen upgrade, our recommendation here.

The fact that the HP Spectre 13T-3000 is so competitive with top systems like the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus and the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 is something of a testament to HP's design and manufacturing acumen. While these systems are extremely similar in specifications, performance, and quality of design, the HP Spectre 13T-300 starts at $999.99, a few hundred dollars less than the competition. To sell this quality of a product at that more reasonable price is no small feat, but to do so while offering longer battery life and similar performance makes it one of the better ultrabooks on the market today. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus remains the Editors' Choice due to its superior display and faster multimedia performance, but if those features don't grab you, the HP Spectre 13T-300 is a more affordable alternative.

Design has rarely been PC makers' strong suit. It isn't the fastest 13.3-inch ultrabook, but the Spectre 13 is a sleek, solidly built contender with an innovative touch pad that reduces the need to swipe and tap its 1080p touch screen. Add nine-hour battery life, and it's a good value at $999.

Under the hood, you’ll find a fourth-generation Intel Core i5-4200U CPU paired with 4GB of DDR3/1600 memory. The 128GB SSD feels a bit cramped, but you can double the storage for an additional $150. The PC packs Intel’s integrated graphics, so you won't get much in the way of gaming performance, but turning down settings will do in a pinch. Those components are good enough to earn a respectable WorldBench 8.1 score of 270. One shortcoming you won’t be able to fix: the Spectre 13’s cooling fan. It kicks in when the processor starts doing any heavy lifting, and the noise can be annoying.

Performance is the Spectre 13t’s only problem. Though its specifications look fine on paper, they translated to below-average figures in both our compute and 3D benchmarks. Day-to-day use isn’t a problem, but you’ll notice the lack of grunt when editing video or playing games. By every other metric, however, this Ultrabook excels.
