Редкие устройства заслуживают таких эпитетов, однако не постесняемся сказать, что HUAWEI MateBook X Pro представляет собой один из самых качественных ноутбуков в своем классе, а подходящих ему соперников (среди которых есть пара моделей Apple) можно пересчитать по пальцам одной руки. Конечно, запросы пользователей разнятся: кто-то не приемлет даже компактные лэптопы без дискретной графики, портов USB Type-A, кардридера или, например, дополнительных клавиш. И все же герой обзора на голову превосходит большинство похожих машин, если поставить во главу угла инструменты ежедневных рабочих процессов, не связанных со значительной нагрузкой на железо. Или связанных, ведь чипы Core 12-й серии обладают быстродействием, которое раньше давалось лишь ценой энергопотребления свыше 50 Вт и громкого рева вентиляторов, а HUAWEI MateBook X Pro работает заметно тише и нагревается меньше обыкновенных ультрабуков прошлого поколения благодаря системе охлаждения на основе испарительной камеры. У HUAWEI MateBook X Pro по всем параметрам выдающийся экран: пропорции 3:2, высокое разрешение и частота обновления, громадный запас яркости, точная цветопередача — и все это в одном устройстве. Лучшими характеристиками обладают только панели с подсветкой Mini LED. Кроме того, фирменное ПО позволяет эмулировать пространство sRGB, что является необходимой, но зачастую отсутствующей функцией для экранов с расширенным цветовым охватом. Механика шасси и, главное, клавиатуры почти идеальна на фоне массы конкурентов. Большинство ультрабуков страдают от недостаточной жесткости корпуса, который гнется и барабанит в процессе печати. MateBook X Pro — одно из немногочисленных предложений, в которых эта проблема решена, причем без вреда для массы устройства. Еще большей редкостью остаются ноутбуки с тактильной отдачей тачпада, заменяющей механические переключатели.

Практически неизменными остались габариты и вес, клавиатура и разрешение веб-камеры. Всё. Если к первым двум характеристикам никаких претензий быть не может, то вот клавиатуру хотелось бы видеть со столбиком клавиш с PgUp и PgDown, а веб-камеру давно пора ставить с приличным разрешением, а не с тем, над которым бюджетные смартфоны шутят в своих «стендапах». Чего еще можно желать от столь компактного и стильного ультрабука, даже представить себе не можем.

But that sub-seven-hour battery life is disappointing, especially when you consider how far it is from the Tiger Lake model we tested earlier in the year. It's safe to say that - on the whole - the updated MateBook X Pro is a refinement of the original 2022 design. But arguably is the laptop that earlier version should have been. The updated magnesium alloy finish gives it a really lovely look and texture, the 14.2-inch display offers vivid but accurate colours and crisp detail, while the speakers elevate the experience. Plus, there's plenty of power here with efficient cooling that it copes with just about any task as long as you don't need something that needs a more powerful dedicated graphics processing unit. There's no denying it's an expensive machine, but given the improvements it seems - at least - that it's more worthy of that price tag than its predecessor was.

However, Huawei's thin, light and elegant MateBook X Pro (2022) can hold its own with the best of them. It carries a premium price tag (£1,799), but in our opinion is worth the money -- especially with a 28-inch monitor thrown in for free. Unfortunately for buyers across the pond, the MateBook X Pro (2022) is not officially available in the US. The 2022 MateBook X Pro performs well with mainstream workloads, although the lack of discrete graphics hampers it in the gaming stakes. Its 14.2-inch screen is bright, with good colour gamut coverage and accuracy, even if it's not an OLED panel, while the audio subsystem is as good as they come. The only disappointments are 720p rather than 1080p webcam resolution, the lack of an SD card slot and moderate battery life.

All in all, I think the Huawei MateBook X Pro has a lot to offer, and while it is a bit pricy, it’s not overly expensive for what you get. Again, the £1,799 price tag includes a fairly expensive monitor in the package, so this isn’t as expensive as it initially appears. For what you pay, you get a phenomenal display, great sound, premium build quality, and a good typing experience. You can’t ask for a lot more. Except, maybe, for it to be available in the United States. My biggest issues with the Huawei MateBook X Pro have to do with the built-in webcam and microphone setup, plus the lack of legacy ports is unfortunate. I also didn’t love some aspects of the touchpad, but you might be able to get used to how it works. As for the Huawei MateView SE, I’d say this is a nice monitor for the price. I find the lack of speakers a bit unfortunate because I would also like to hook up my Nintendo Switch to it, but if you’re only using a laptop, it probably already has better speakers than any monitor in this price range.

We really enjoyed our time with the new Huawei MateBook X Pro. Assuming it doesn’t somehow fall apart during our testing process - which we would be surprised to see - we’ll feel very comfortable recommending it to anyone looking for a lightweight new laptop. At this point, our main criticism is the relative lack of physical port options. There’s four ports in total (not including the headphone jack), all four of which are USB-C; No USB-A, no SD card reader, and no video output in sight. This is likely due to the ultra-thin form factor, but it’s still annoying that it necessitates the purchase of a USB hub when it’s already going to be quite pricey.

We already knew the latest Matebook X Pro was a slick-looking ultraportable with a stellar screen – and that hasn’t changed now Huawei has upgraded the internals. It’s still a great work machine, thanks to the tactile keyboard, responsive touchpad and 3:2 aspect ratio. The high resolution, HDR support and decent set of speakers mean it can entertain as well. The extra CPU cores have given performance a welcome boost, meaning it can crunch numbers on par with many chunkier machines. A few new colour options help the updated machine stand out from its more businesslike rivals, and by the time you configure an M2-powered MacBook Air with same RAM and storage the price gap is pretty minimal. Battery life remains a sore spot, though, and creative types will still need to look elsewhere for a machine with a dedicated GPU. But if you’re simply after a premium work machine with a splash of style, it absolutely gets the job done.
