I had a certain level of expectation when unboxing the HP Chromebook Plus x360, a Chromebook at a mid-range price point, and by and large it's delivered exactly what I was expecting. In a few areas it was better than I thought it would be, though, including the quality of the screen and the webcam. That 360-degree screen is a standout feature, too, as you won't find it on many laptops, Chromebooks or otherwise. All of which adds up to great value. During my review time, I often found myself picking up this Chromebook to work on rather than using my MacBook Air or a Windows desktop PC.

As convertible Chromebooks go, the HP Chromebook Plus x360 falls short of the premium Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, but to be fair, it costs a few hundred dollars less. In its price range, it doesn't topple the Asus Chromebook CX34 Plus as our Editors' Choice because the CX34 has a handy HDMI port. But if you can live without HDMI and want 2-in-1 functionality, the HP x360 is a first-rate alternative.

I recommend buying the HP Chromebook Plus x360 if you're looking for a great all-round work 2-in-1. In my experience, this laptop tends to go on sale quite a bit, but $199 is the lowest price I've seen to date. Something to note: the Chromebook Plus x360 is only available in one configuration and there's no way to customize its hardware. So, if you're looking for a similar option, I recommend the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i.

Chromebooks are not laptops designed for power users who need to utilize x86 applications. But for most people’s needs, a Chromebook can handle the amount of web surfing, applications, and email management required. And a low-end Chromebook often performs better at those tasks than a low-end Windows machine. Of course, an economical laptop comes with compromises like a dim, inaccurate display or mushy keyboard. These compromises are offset by a low price, decent performance, and high battery life to make a compelling choice. But the HP Chromebook Plus x360 offers only decent performance, a loud dual-speaker array, and a sturdy convertible hinge in return for the low battery life, muddled keyboard, and inaccurate display. $429 is far from a bank-breaking price tag, but it is not the cheapest Chromebook on the market, so you can’t even justify the x360 with an incredibly low price.
